Slow Websites Are Silent Killers For Businesses

Global report finds 73% of consumers would move to a competitor if a website is slow to load.

Key findings

  • In a poll of 3,200 in the UK and USA, eight out of 10 adults (80%) find a consistently slow running website more frustrating than one that is down.

  • Just under three quarters (73%) would abandon a slow running website and go to a competitor.

  • Website speed is important to 88% of Brits and 85% of Americans.
  • Slow websites frustrate 60% of consumers compared to a website that is down (23%).

London, & Boulder, Colo 24th July 2018: Over 80% of consumers are more frustrated by consistently slow websites than those that are temporarily down. That’s according to a global online study today from Eggplant, the customer experience optimization specialists.

Eggplant polled a combined total of 3,200 UK and US adults on attitudes to website speed and performance, and found that a business with a slow or underperforming website is likely to lose 73% of its customers to a competitor.

While outages are a problem for businesses around the world, the survey reveals that a slow website is much more damaging than one that is temporarily down. To stay competitive and retain customers, retailers must focus on website speed alongside website availability.

UK findings

81% of Brits find a slow website more frustrating to use than one that is down or not working. In fact, 7 in 10 (70%) of UK adults rate website speed as important when it comes to online activity. Of this 81%, a third (33%) said website speed was very important, while only 17% said speed was not important at all.

The online research also found that three quarters (75%) of Brits would be likely to use a competitor website if the one they were using was slow. This is especially important for brands who commoditize based entirely on price such as tickets, hotel and travel sites.

When it comes to UK consumers, site speed is so important that almost 3 in 5 (60%) feel much more negative to a brand if its site is consistently slow to load. This is in contrast to less than a quarter (23%) who feel the same way if a site is down or not working. However, nearly half (49%) of consumers feel slightly negative towards a brand if its website is not working.

US Findings

Across the board, US consumers have the same sentiment to website speed vs. downtime. Only slightly down on the UK, 79% of Americans find a slow running website more frustrating to use than one that is down or not working. In fact, 41% of American adults rate website speed as very important when it comes to online activity. Like the UK, only a tiny proportion (1%) said that website speed was not important at all.

Americans would be fractionally less likely than those in the UK to move to a competitor if a site was slow, with 69% stating they would move (compared to 75% in the UK). Alongside this, 24% of US consumers stated they would eat less than half a donut before giving up on a website and moving to another.

When it comes to American consumers, site speed is so important that well over half (59%) feel much more negative to a brand if its site is consistently slow to load. This is in contrast to less than a quarter (23%) who feel the same way if a site was temporarily down or not working.

Responsive, fast websites are a crucial part of business success worldwide, or organizations risk losing customers to competitors. When it comes to preparing for the peak retail period, website speed is even more important than availability, and businesses need to be ready.

Japanese telecom giant deploys Eggplant Functional to help improve user experience.

London, UK, and Tokyo, JAPAN – May 3rd, 2018 – Eggplant, the maker of the Digital Automation Intelligence Suite of software, today announced that it is working for NTT DOCOMO to support an automated service monitoring system for the company’s internet services. NTT DOCOMO is Japan's largest mobile telecommunications company, providing innovative, convenient and secure mobile services to over 74 million customers in Japan via advanced wireless networks.

The end-user quality of NTT DOCOMO’s internet services is determined by complicated factors including traffic that varies within the network, across a variety of content, with an external cloud environment, and based on the time of day. The company decided to implement a solution for detecting failures proactively from the viewpoint of users by having devices access services on a regular basis.

NTT DOCOMO considered several solution providers before selecting Eggplant Functional introduced by NS Solutions Corporation (NSSOL). The key factors that led to the selection of Eggplant Functional were its cross-device capabilities and the robustness of its features. NTT DOCOMO is using Eggplant Functional to test previously untestable areas, as well as delivering service confirmation and monitoring capabilities to help improve the overall customer experience.

For NTT DOCOMO, Eggplant Functional is being used to automatically record internet operations, providing high levels of reliability for scenarios performed. The monitoring system can record and reproduce a series of operations, including touching an icon and logging on to the service. Recorded operations are stored in a script, which allows easy maintenance and supports iOS, Android and others as a multidevice solution.

Testplant Creates World’s First Fusion Test Automation Engine

With Eggplant Functional V18.0, testers can use intelligent image and text understanding, API automation, and WebDriver object automation within a single test.

Boulder, CO & London, UK — 3 January 2018 — Testplant today announced that Eggplant Functional V18.0, part of its Digital Automation Intelligence Suite, includes the first test automation engine that allows users to use intelligent image and text understanding, API automation, and WebDriver object automation—all within a single test.

For years, testers have debated the merits of the different approaches to interacting with the user experience of an application. With Eggplant Functional, Testplant’s user-centric, intelligent automation software for any device, teams can test from the user perspective and gain valuable insight into the entire user experience providing visibility that helps testers understand and test the whole user journey.  

Using WebDriver, the API used by the open-source test automation engines Selenium and Appium, test teams now have the ability to use and utilize existing user preferences or requirements, and can reuse their existing test assets. Users can also incorporate Selenium WebDriver methods into Eggplant Functional scripts, using images and web objects interchangeably.

Boulder, CO & London, UK — 6 December 2017 — The hottest AI platform today will be a cold fish by the end of 2018. That’s according to Testplant’s technology predictions for the year ahead.

The digital automation intelligence company has compiled a list of Smart/IoT predictions, claiming that 2018 will be the year the common car tyre will become ‘connected,’ with sensors embedded that can talk wirelessly to telemetry boxes and the cloud, acting as a source for big data analytics.

While IoT will fuel this new set of innovative services, Testplant warns that government needs to pay more attention to creating a whole new standard of IoT certification using a new AI-powered test technology in order to avoid a range of privacy and ethical dilemmas caused by physical objects merging into digital information infrastructure.

Testplant’s CTO Antony Edwards also called for standardisation and proper testing of algorithms and regulations, raising the issue of criminal negligence as AI algorithms out of our control have the potential to bring mass fatalities.

On a positive note, the predictions note the emergence of the first ‘Open Data’ communities, where AI and deep-learning drive the creation of communities where people share data repositories to help train algorithms.

In terms of the technology department, Testplant expects that software testing will move back in-house, as the productivity gains of automation and the need to have testing more aligned with user experience increase. For the IT department, HR and recruitment are set to become the most important internal departments, with the dramatic increase in demands for new skills in security, data science and in-house testing.

With regard to DevOps and security, Testplant also predicts that security testing will stop being an ad-hoc activity performed only by specialists; with every release project including some level of security testing. The company claims that 2018 is the year that the business itself will be pulled directly into DevOps, especially product owners who, under pressure to compete, will drive true change through continuous delivery.

Testplant Survey Reveals Critical Business ‘App Gap’ between User Experience and Software Testing

Boulder, CO & London, UK – 10th October 2017 – Research demonstrating the acute pressure that businesses are under to deliver apps in the IoT and digital era, has just been released by digital automation intelligence specialist, Testplant.

Testplant’s ‘Application Crisis Research’, conducted amongst over 750 development team leaders in the US and UK, revealed that 68% plan to build more apps during the next 12 months. At the same time as reporting increased volumes of development, 91% of developers agree that user expectations for innovation and quality have also increased.

– 70% of businesses feel consumer pressure to innovate quickly
– 49% admit to releasing apps before quality testing
– 40% confess to releasing apps without testing

The ‘App Complexity Crisis’
The research confirms that organizations are not only planning to build more apps in the next year, but they will be more complex. Over the next 12-18 months, 50% say their company will develop more apps with IoT components, more than half (58%) say their company will develop more apps with AI components, and 62% say their company will increase the amount of apps deploying machine learning/deep learning components.

The ‘App Gap’
In addition, 42% believe that they are expected to design, develop and test apps in an unrealistic amount of time with over a third (36%) admitting they are not given enough time to ensure apps are properly tested before deployment. 81% believe that with more time, apps deployed by their team would have a greater impact on the business. Over half of the respondents (56%) agree that use of outdated techniques and tools is holding them back from meeting the demands of the digital world. 75% agree that with better tools, apps deployed by their team would have a greater impact on the business.

Pressure cooker
Of the survey respondents, 60% say the majority of pressure comes from within the company, whereas nearly half (49%) say pressure comes from competitors. 66% feel pressure from their company to innovate quickly and worryingly, this results in 49% putting out apps before they go through ideal testing. 45% knowingly put out apps that will perform below initial requirements.

When it comes to specific app testing, automation beyond execution was ranked as the most critical challenge by 67%, though 70% claim they are now more focused on automated testing than they were in the past.
